How do I use secure mail on my Webfusion account

This answer explains how you can use the new secure mail features from WebFusion.co.uk.

webfusion offers secure SMTP, POP and IMAP connections on the Myserverworld.net hosting platform.

When using standard mail services, the connection requires authentication but once connected the data sent or received is not encrypted. Using secure mail servers over an SSL connection, the data is encrypted with the same secure certificate methods used by online shopping sites.

Using secure mail services requires some changes to be made to the settings of your mail client. Instructions for Outlook, Outlook Express and Thunderbird are included below.

For other email clients, please consult your documentation or the supplier's support site.

Technical note: Normally, SMTP uses port 25, POP uses port 110 and IMAP uses port 143. However, when connecting to secure mail over SSL, you need to use the following ports:

  • SMTPS (SMTP over SSL): port 465
  • POP3S (POP-3 over SSL): port 995
  • IMAPS (IMAP over SSL): port 993

You must also connect to the mail server mail.myserverworld.net, rather than the usual mail.yourdomainname address. This is because the secure certificate is only valid for that specific address.
