How to manage domains on Myserverworld.com

Managing Domains (pre 08/02/2006)

This answer explains how you manage domains in your MyServerWorld.com linux shared hosting package.

This article applies to Linux Shared Hosting bought before 08/02/2006 accounts.

Everything you need to register and administer domain names is available through our domain holding and registration system 123-reg. Important please note: you cannot alter your domain names from within your MyServerWorld control panel

If your domain name came with your hosting package

Then you don’t need to do anything. We will have already set the correct details (name servers and DNS zone file) for you. If you would like anything modified, for example your MX records, then please submit a support request via the "Ask a question" tab in the support area of our website.

When the time comes for the renewal of a WebFusion domain name, for your convenience and to ensure uninterrupted hosting of your account, if you have chosen to have payments taken from your supplied credit/debit card, we will attempt to collect the amount due from these securely-held details on the invoice date. If the transaction fails, we will endeavour to contact you via email to advise you that an alternative payment should be submitted if the domain name is to be retained. Please note that non-payment of a domain renewal invoice within 7 days of the invoice date may cause the domain to be deactivated, affecting any hosting associated with that domain. It is your responsibility to ensure that payment has been submitted for the renewal in advance of the renewal date - if we do not receive payment we are unable to renew the domain on your behalf and it may eventually be deleted from the registry.

If you have your domain name registered with 123-reg.co.uk

123-reg is our sister company and they share our name servers, so if yours are set to “ns.123-reg.co.uk” and “ns2.123-reg.co.uk” – leave them as they are. If your domain name in 123-reg currently has the zone file and DNS records for 123-reg's area (for example, when you go to your webpage and you see a 123-reg holding page, or if you have used web or email forwarding…), you will need to update this in your 123-reg control panel to point across to WebFusion.

To do this, once logged in to your 123-reg member's area, select your domain name (if you have more than one in your control panel) then click on Manage DNS. In there is a section that has 'point to your WebFusion Linux hosting...' in the white box put in your IP address of your hosting account then submit the changes. This IP address is given in your WebFusion welcome email that contains your username and password. Within a few hours the change will have gone through and your domain name will be resolving correctly to your hosting account with WebFusion.

Transferring a domain

Transferring your existing domain name to your WebFusion hosting account is a straightforward process that only takes a short time to complete.

.uk Domain Names including .co.uk and .org.uk:

Request your current hosting company or domain registration provider to amend the record for your domain name as follows:

IPS Tag : 123-REG

Primary Nameserver : ns.webfusion.co.uk (212.67.202.1)

Secondary nameserver : ns2.webfusion.co.uk (212.67.203.240)

You should also open a free account or login to your existing account with 123-reg, our sister company. Go to the ‘Domain transfer to 123-reg’ section, click ‘Transfer Domains to 123-reg’ and follow the onscreen instructions.

Please note: It may take 24-48hrs after your current provider has changed their records before your domain becomes fully active through 123-reg.

Other Domain Names including .com. .net and .org:

To transfer other domain names to 123-reg, please first ensure that the email address for the current administrative contact is valid and that the recipient will be available to respond to the transfer request. You may need to amend contact details with your current provider first if this is not the case. You should also check with your existing provider that your domain isn’t locked to prevent transfers.

To initiate the transfer, you should open a free 123-reg account or log into your existing one at 123-reg. Go to the ‘Domain transfer to 123-reg’ section, click ‘Transfer Domains to 123-reg’ and follow the onscreen instructions.

Your current administrative contact will receive an email from OpenSRS which will give them login details for a URL from which they can confirm or cancel the transfer.

Please note: Once the transfer is accepted it should be completed withing 24hrs, but may take up to seven days to complete if your current provider does not operate on the widely-used OpenSRS system.

Managing your domains

You can configure all of your domain names, change settings, set and edit Meta tags, set security functions or add more domains to your package quickly and easily all from within your 123-reg member's area. The 123-reg system also provides you with full DNS and domain contact management as well as providing redirection address options, set up directories and a domain status overview.

Changing your name servers

  • First log into your 123-reg control panel and go to the ‘Modify Domain’ section
  • Select "change name servers" and then at the bottom of the page enter the two name servers you wish to use.

Please note: Name servers must be domain names. They must not terminate with a dot and must not include an IP address. You will need a minimum of 2 name servers.

Managing your DNS records

If your domain name is with 123-reg then you can modify the DNS records yourself by logging into the ‘Manage DNS Section’ of the 123-reg control panel.

From here, you can add/remove A records, CNAMES and MX records. Alternatively, you can request these changes through the support section of your MyServerWorld control panel

Mapping a domain name

Domain mapping allows a single version of a website to exist but with more than one domain name used as a web address for that site, for example domain mapping allows you to point www.domain.com to www.domain1.com. Please note domain mapping is not the same as web forwarding. With web forwarding a domain is forwarded from one place to another, with domain mapping both domains are fully configured to respond to the same shared hosting space.

You can only map to the same space as your main domain (e.g. www.yourdomain.co.uk); unfortunately mapping to a sub directory (e.g. intranet.yourdomain.co.uk) is not currently supported in shared hosting accounts. You can however use the web forwarding service within your 123-reg control panel to forward a domain to a sub directory on your account. The domain which is to be mapped will need to be in the 123-reg control panel and the name servers pointing to ns.webfusion.co.uk and ns2webfusion.co.uk

The domain mapping service is found through the MyServerWorld Upgrade centre and is currently priced at £25 per year + VAT

Mapping multiple domain names

It is possible to point multiple domain names to your account by submitting a mapping request to Support via the "Ask a question" tab in the support area of our website. To remove or cancel a mapping send an email in the same way, but please allow at least 72 hours for any changes to take effect.

Expiring domains

It is good practice to keep an eye on the expiry date of your domain to ensure that you do not lose it! To help you with this, 123-reg automatically sends you renewal updates and reminders. You can also view and renew domains that are up for renewal via your 123-reg control panel.
