What is a dedicated server?
Find out what dedicated servers are and how your business can benefit from having your own server to host your site(s).
What is a dedicated server?
A dedicated server is a physical server (or computer) running a server based software that runs various services over a network. The most common use for a dedicated server is to run a web hosting environment where webpages are hosted for websites. We call it a 'dedicated' server as it is a single server dedicated to a single customer or task. In web hosting terms it is possible to also have a "shared" server which houses several customers and as such is much cheaper but operates with reduced performance as system resources are shared between all the customers on that server. If your website becomes too busy and the resource requirements are greater than shared hosting can provide, a dedicated server is definitely worth investing in. This way all the resources on the server are dedicated entirely to your site and not shared with any third parties.
Why use dedicated servers?
There are many benefits of a dedicated server such as flexibility, control, resilience, reliability and security. Dedicated servers give you more control allowing you to install and configure the software that your business needs to run effectively. This means you have the flexibility to run the services you require and use your server in the manner you wish. You can dedicate your server to a single task like a web server, a database server, an application server, a game server, a file server or anything else you require because you have the freedom to do it and as you can utilise the full resources of the server you can achieve optimum performance. If you wish your server can also do a number of tasks at once and not be dedicated to a single use, although this is not recommended as if the server was to experience technical difficulties you would loose all services, spreading your services onto multiple servers is the best idea. With a dedicated server you are the system administrator so security is your responsibility but this means you can ensure your server has the protection you require.
Also, a dedicated server ensures that third party activities do not impact on your services. If you were hosting a website on a shared server and another user's site was consuming a lot of resources this would impact your site as you share the resources. Of course, the costs associated to the use of a dedicated server are higher than those of shared hosting, but this price means you have much greater control and flexibility over your business.
